Coincidence?
I'm currently on a 2-week break from work. My boss was so kind to give me a short holiday before I start chambering, because she warned me that when I start working for real, it's not going to be a bed of roses. Anyway, I've managed to take the time to catch up with some new TV shows (I'm trying to convince myself that subscribing to Astro is worth the money).
Just this week, I watched 2 relatively new shows on TV, both hospital dramas. The first was "House" on AXN. I found it to be rather refreshing . Something about Hugh Laurie's dry wit and sarcasm brings a different edge to stereotype dramas nowadays. It's nice to see that TV doesn't always have to be politically correct all the time. (Bear in mind that this is my personal opinion and it may not necessarily appeal to everyone.) Anyway, this week's episode was about two teenage boys who were suddenly seized with epileptic-like fits and admitted to the hospital in a coma. Turns out that the cause of their seizures were what Dr. House termed "poisoned pants". Both boys were wearing new jeans that were contaminated with a form of pesticide, hence releasing a virus through their skin which in turn infected their brains. So that was "House".
The very next day I decided to watch "Medical Investigation" on Star World, a sort of "ER meets CSI" type of show. This time 4 teenage girls were admitted to the hospital, also in epileptic fits, and all 4 in coma. And surprise, surprise... the cause of their seizures? New jeans which were poisoned with toxins from pesticide.
Watching these 2 shows made me think, are screen writers nowadays really out of ideas? Either that, or who copied who? Or is it just a strange coincidence? Poisoned jeans are something quite out of the ordinary. It's a really unsafe world when you can even be poisoned by something that you are totally unaware of, especially something so common as your clothes. I've never heard of it happening or even thought that it could happen before till this week. I guess TV shows nowadays should really be viewed and taken with a pinch of salt.
